Surgery 4.0: The last 3 surgical revolutions have taken place in little more than 50 years. The fourth phase that we are now entering is fundamentally based on the use of information and digitalisation. Today we are witnessing the result of a convergence of digital, physical, and biological technologies which, in the surgical field of health, have reached their maximum expression in the emergence of «digital surgery», also known as «surgery 4.0» or «cognitive surgery».
As surgical techniques developed, there was a growing awareness of the need for a change in the way surgery was taught. On the one hand, it was necessary to train alongside those with the most experience, often in a kind of vassalage relationship. On the other hand, the experience offered by experts and prestigious centres was not always available to everyone.
The incorporation of technological innovations aimed at improving visualisation such as the digital 3D system and 4K visualisation managed to break the glass ceiling in which minimally invasive surgery found itself1.
In addition, 5G technology allows the medical team to connect in real-time with an expert surgeon remotely participating in or guiding the procedure.
